Veterans stage sleep-in protest at State Parliament House over Repat Hospital closure

A SMALL group of veterans have vowed never to surrender to State Government plans to close the Repatriation General Hospital and have instead captured the high ground at State Parliament.

The vets and supporters on Tuesday spent their second night sleeping in swags in the area at the top of the front steps, despite being told by officials they were not allowed to.

They are using the toilet at a nearby fast food outlet, and while keeping the area clean it is now festooned with swags, blankets, pillows, food supplies, chiller packs, chairs, placards and other equipment.

Veterans Affairs Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith met the men Tuesday night and sought to reassure them services would be improved under planned changes.

“The Repat is not closing. Its facilities are being relocated which will be an improvement,” he said.

Augustinus “Daktari” Krikke, 64, who spent 17 years in the army, including a tour of Vietnam as a medic, travels to the Repat twice a week from Davoren Park for treatment for heart and lung problems.

“We will stay here as long as it takes, and if they stop us sleeping here we will simply sit on the steps,” he said.

“This Government says it is run down — the reason it is rundown is because they didn’t put any money into it.

“It is a place where veterans can relate to each other. If you turn up feeling down the group senses it pretty quickly, closes ranks and helps you over a rough patch. You are not going to get that if they break the Repat up.”

Mr Hamilton-Smith had a long discussion with the group seeking to reassure them the changes were in their best interest.

He said he is in favour of keeping the Ward 17 for mental problems at the Repat site, but noted a final decision may hinge on whether it is considered such patients may also need the facilities of a full functioning hospital for related conditions.

“I want to assure these men there are real advantages for veterans in the Transforming Health changes,” he said.

“It is going to happen. Services are going to be relocated.”

The assurances did not stop the vigil. The four veterans on hand at 8pm say other veterans will arrive to sleep in rotations, with members of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club on hand as security as they sleep.

“People are donating food to us, and passers-by are giving us fantastic support, signing our petition and saying how disgusted they feel at Labor’s decision to close the Repat,” Mr Krikke said.

The situation puts parliamentary officials in a delicate situation — calling in police to oust the ageing veterans protesting a cause popular in the community would not be a good look, but nor is turning Parliament’s entry into a bivouac which may tempt protesters for various other causes to occupy it for a sleep-in protest.

I worked at Hollywood Repat in WA for 9 years!

Great place to work...

And we staged a picket so they wouldn't drop the Aussie flag to half mast the day that evil fuck Hirohito died in 1989...

The fight to save the Repat is certainly gaining some attention...some Afghanistan veterans are providing security at night and there are a few blokes from the Tattoo Club also camping out on the steps...

It’s time to stop betraying our veterans

Vietnam veterans have set up camp at Parliament House in protest of the State Government's decision to close the Repat.
IN 17 days, a nation will remember.

It will remember the Anzacs wading into a conflagration that killed 60,000 in less than four years.

The war that did not end all wars. Afterwards, the Australian legions came home to new campaigns; campaigns against their own bodies and minds.

The tens of thousands of maimed men – missing limbs, hacking from gassed lungs and drinking to appease their demons – fought for the rest of their often short lives.

And so it goes. A recent Four Corners report highlighted how today’s veterans have slipped not through cracks but yawning chasms.

In a harrowing report about soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder, Kerry O’Brien delivered a sting in the tail.

“I think there’s a question in this for all those politicians who collectively sent these soldiers to war,” O’Brien editorialised.

“Particularly those who shared the spotlight with them as they went: What have you done since? What are you doing now to help them deal with the price they have paid?”

Many of the Afghanistan veterans are lost down the same lonely path trod by the Vietnam men, the Korean veterans, the World War II diggers and those of too many more conflicts.

Here we come to a case study for the broad picture. The closure of repatriation services at the Daws Rd hospital is being fought by many in the veteran community.

Others are sanguine about the closure; they trust the State Government to deliver on its promise to replicate the Repat’s services at other locations.

In February opponents of the plan the shut the Repat rallied across the road from the hospital.
But, as the opponents of the closure point out, why should we believe a government that has broken its Repat promise?

“The Repat Hospital will never, ever be closed by a Labor Government,” Mike Rann said in 2010.

So we entreat the government to not compound the broken promise with what would constitute another betrayal of our veterans.

The Repat’s services must not only be replicated at other sites – they must be bettered. Consider this from 95-year-old Burma Railway survivor Norvyn ‘Bluey’ Stevens: “I give thanks to the PTSD course at the Repat. That put me on the right track.”

The Repat supporters continue to sleep on the steps of Parliament House in SA. They also continue to get signatures for the petition. There was a dawn service planned at the site but apparently a road block was set up and the Veterans MC were stopped from riding their bikes through to Parliament. That is how low the SA government will go...
