Fred Brophy's Famous Boxing Troupe
« on: June 21, 2013, 01:26:20 PM »

Starting in the late 19th Century boxing troupes of professional fighters would travel the mining towns and outback of the country, following fairs and carnivals, putting up big top tents and taking on all-comers for cash in the ring.

Among the more famous of tent boxing troupes, are the ones created by Roy Bell and Jimmy Sharman. Only three tents still travel today, Roy Bell's Touring Stadium, The Oldest Original Boxing Tent- Est 1924 & Owned and Operated by Michael Karaitiana (grandson of Roy Bell). Michael still currently tours with Roy Bell's Touring Stadium throughout Queensland, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory with his wife Mandy and family. Fred Brophy's, who owns the Cracow Hotel in Cracow, Queensland, still travels with his troupe across Queensland with his wife, Sandi, and son, Fred Brophy Jr. Blue Ribbons Boxing owned by Aubrey Ribbons Jr., Aubrey (a 6th generation Showmen) is the only boxing tent operator to travel outside Queensland or the Northern Territory, making its way through New South Wales and Tasmania.

I'm sure you all have a story of your own to share about our famous aussie outback tent boxing, please share for others to join in  :)

Fred's troupe came to Pt Pirie SA, while I was living there, about 1980
& no, I didn't partake as a contender  :-[ ;D but I knew all the locals who did.
Each bout was 3 one minute rounds, on canvas over sand/sawdust ? no ropes.
One of the troupe was a European backpacker, who Fred named the 'Belgian Bomber'
- very tall, with a wide step & long reach, built more like a basketballer.
Johnny Retzas - much shorter - sat him on his arse, & next session
Johnny was on the scaffold instead, with the 'Bomber' title
His brother Theo also won his bout.
Another local - a Marine & Harbours diver, won his also, but broke a thumb
doing so & cost him dearly, with time off work - he blamed the lack of padding
in the well worn gloves.
A local fisherman, who at the time, was the most tattooed bloke I knew,
was barred from the tent, for spitting at his opponent in the first round.
I can only recall one local beaten, Mick B - not a boxer at all - just Dutch courage
& a bit of a clown, was strange his brother, Gary (Golden Gloves) didn't fight

I saw Brophy's at Birdsville last year...The fights were a joke with the fighters off the street pre-selected well before the pre fight beat up...Good entertainment and a real laugh but very one sided...

 :P
One of my club brothers used to work in a touring boxing tent... dunno what his nickname was - but he's a top bloke & "allus has wan at eleven"...  still deadly with a 1-2 1-2

He's now living in Tasmania, but it'd be perverse of me to hold that against him!!!

I missed this thread, have had a coupla goes in the tent. years ago at the Darwin show I got in with a bloke called the Cunnamulla Kid, lasted 1 round , ended up with a broken tooth and a fair sort of a scar on my bottom lip. second time was in Darwin a few years later and jumped in with a mate, both pretty pissed, both ende up with black eyes and fell on the floor laughing. both times Brophy used 20oz gloves ,which are as heavy as medicine balls after a few minutes and 20 beers.Fred Brophy now owns the Crackow Pub up here in Qld, before Newmans bullshit we used to stop there fairly regular, one of our young fellers was a fighter for Fred, ithink 120 fights and only 2 losses, pretty handy bloke. top bloke Fred is and always been made welcome there. worth a drop in if you are passing.
